Plot Synopsis

In the world of Remnant, humans and faunus fight an endless battle against the creatures of Grimm. One such human is young protagonist Ruby Rose, who aims to become a huntress and protect the world just like her late mother. When she becomes embroiled in a robbery carried out by the gangster Roman Torchwick, she fails to capture him, but her efforts are noticed by the headmaster of Beacon Academy, Professor Ozpin, who grants her permission to enroll two years early, joining a wide cast of characters including her older half-sister Yang Xiao Long, the stuck-up heiress Weiss Schnee, and the bookish Blake Belladonna.

How is it plural?

One of the defining characteristics of RWBY is that each character has an inspiration from various sources, mostly fairy tales. One such character is Klein, the butler of the Schnee family, whose inspiration is the Seven Dwarves of Snow White fame. Each of the seven is a different alter, with their eye color changing to match; while their status as a system has only been hinted at in the show itself, the creators have confirmed at panels that they were explicitly intended to be a DID system.

— Major spoiler warning! —

In addition, after Professor Ozpin's death in Volume 3, he is revealed to be the reincarnation of the villain Salem's late husband, Ozma, as his soul begins to merge with that of a young farmboy named Oscar Pine. With each generation of reincarnations, the previous generation instructs and guides the new host until they are ready to fuse and let the new host take up the cause of defeating Salem alone, acting sometimes as a guiding voice internally, and occasionally taking direct control of the body when necessary.
