Plot Synopsis

Despite being the daughter of the leader of an infamous yakuza clan, Kisaragi Maki wants nothing to do with the underworld, dreaming of someday becoming a normal bride in a normal family. However, from time to time she blacks out, only to find the battered bodies of delinquents knocked out around her! Distressed at these episodes, she reaches out to her grandfather for help, only to find that her condition is hereditary - just like her father, she blacks out and releases a violent version of herself whenever she sees blood.

How is it plural?

While Change 2!! only goes into relatively shallow detail on Maki's condition, its sequel W Change!! explores the way they experience systemhood more thoroughly. The "normal" Maki wants nothing to do with the yakuza and strives to put all that behind her and live a normal life, while the "violent" Maki proudly claims her yakuza heritage and gladly uses violence to achieve her ends, with the former initially unable to remember the latter's actions. However, little hints gradually suggest that their connection goes beyond simply switching at the sight of blood, most notably the fact that the "violent" Maki consistently beats up the three junior members sent to wake her up every morning despite no apparent blood present to trigger her appearance.

— Major spoiler warning! —

Due to not wanting to accept her place as the heir to her family, the "normal" Maki begins to try to repress the "violent" Maki, leading to their switches becoming more frequent and unpredictable. The two fight back and forth throughout the story, both unable to accept the other. It is also gradually revealed that there is a third alter present in the system, Maki's Shadow, who only appears when the "violent" Maki sees her own blood and is a completely uncontrollable monster that can't differentiate friend from foe.

It is eventually revealed that the Shadow is the real "yakuza instinct" inherited from their father, and the split between the "normal" and "violent" Maki is unrelated. However, due to the instability caused by the "normal" Maki and the "violent" Maki rejecting each other causing the "normal" Maki to become dormant, they are unable to resist the Shadow's control and nearly succumb to it entirely until the "normal" Maki returns, at which point it disappears and the "normal" and "violent" Maki finally begin to work together properly, gaining the ability to cofront, share memories, and switch intentionally.
