The son of a rabbi who had escaped Nazi persecution in Czechoslovakia, Marc Spector never approved of his father's pacifism, and developed DID and the alters Steven Grant and Jake Lockley after being attacked by a close family friend who turned out to be a Nazi deserter and serial killer of Jews. After their father's death, they bounced around between mental hospitals, the US Marine Corps (from which they were dishonorably discharged due to their mental illness), and the CIA, before finally becoming a soldier-for-hire.

Several years later, Marc participated in a raid on an archaelogical dig under the employ of a terrorist named Raoul Bushman. However, when faced with the brutality of Bushman's methods, he turned on Bushman and was beaten and left for dead in the desert. His corpse was found by the daughter of the lead archaelogist at the dig, Marlene, who he had protected after Bushman killed her father, and brought into an ancient Egyptian tomb for shelter. Laid at the feet of an idol of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu, Marc was resurrected to become his Fist, and took up the mantle of the Moon Knight.

Alongside Marlene, who became their girlfriend, and their longtime friend and now sidekick Jean-Paul "Frenchie" Duchamp, Moon Knight would protect the streets of New York from crime, with Marc providing the fighting prowess needed for their vigilante activities, Steven's investments providing millionaire funding for their gear and living expenses, and Jake's work as a cabbie providing connections and information.
