The final and only successful prototype of the ultimate lifeform created by Gerald Robotnik, in his attempts to achieve immortality for his terminally ill granddaughter, Maria. Originally inspired by a prophetic mural depicting Super Sonic, Shadow was completed by merging Gerald's existing research with the DNA of the alien Black Arms leader Black Doom, granting him the ability to generate and wield chaos energy. However, the government feared the dangers of Gerald's research, leading to G.U.N. raiding the Space Colony Ark and killing Maria in the crossfire. With her last breath, Maria begged Shadow to protect humanity and jettisoned him from the Ark, but before he could escape, he was recovered by G.U.N. and placed in stasis on Prison Island, where a vengeful and mentally deteriorating Gerald would twist his memories of Maria into an instrument of revenge.

Fifty years later, Shadow was awakened by Gerald's grandson, Ivo (better known as Dr. Eggman), in an attempt to uncover his grandfather's research. Teaming up with Eggman, Shadow began to carry out Gerald's mission of revenge by causing the Ark to crash into the earth, with his proper memories only returning with the help of Amy Rose. He would again lose his memories after plummeting from space in the aftermath of preventing the Ark's destructive fall, and gradually recover them through the course of fighting Neo Metal Sonic and eventually Black Doom, only fully coming to terms with his past after his second time facing Black Doom as enabled by Eggman's manipulation of the Time Eater.
